Ahmed Marei

EARLY LIFE

Ahmed Marei was born on 14 May 1942 in the village of Al-Dawakhliya, near Mahalla al-Kubra in Egypt’s Gharbia Governorate. He came from a family with artistic and media connections; his brothers included figures in broadcasting and set design. He developed an early interest in performance, participating in school theatre. After initially studying elsewhere, he entered the Higher Institute of Cinema (Acting branch), graduating in 1965. Upon graduation he was appointed as an assistant teacher at the institute, where he also taught declamation (alongside Abdel Wareth Asar) and makeup.

CAREER

Marei began his professional career shortly after graduation, working with the experimental Al-Jayb (Pocket) Theatre and appearing in early film and stage roles. His cinema breakthrough came with the role of Wannis in Shadi Abdel Salam’s landmark historical film The Mummy (Al-Mummia, filmed 1969, widely released later). The film became an international art-house success and remains one of the most celebrated works of Egyptian cinema. He also appeared in The Message (Al-Risalah / Mohammad, Messenger of God, 1976), directed by Moustapha Akkad, playing Zaid ibn Harithah. Other notable film credits include Song on the Passage (Oghneya Ala El-Mamar, 1972), Shadows on the Other Side, The Eloquent Peasant (short), and later works such as Two Against the Law (1992). He also took part in the Polish production In Desert and Wilderness (W pustyni i w puszczy). Although he worked in cinema, the bulk of his career was in television. He specialized in historical, religious, and biographical series, valued for his command of classical Arabic and dignified screen presence. Prominent series include Suleiman al-Halabi, Ahmed ibn Majid, Mohamed al-Fateh, Al-Mutanabbi, Antara, Malhamat al-Hob wa al-Raheel, Awlad Adam, and many others across the 1970s–1990s. He continued working steadily in Egyptian and pan-Arab television until the mid-1990s.

PERSONAL LIFE

He married a Moroccan woman whom he met while working on The Message in Cairo. The couple had two sons, Saeed and Salah. He was known for his commitment to classical Arabic, reading, and a disciplined professional life.

Ahmed Marei is remembered as a refined character and leading actor of Egyptian screen and stage, particularly associated with serious historical and cultural projects. His performance as Wannis in The Mummy secured him a lasting place in the canon of classic Egyptian cinema. He died in Cairo on 16 July 1995.
