Biography
EARLY LIFE
Agatha Amata was born Agatha Nwakalor on 4 November 1969 in Lagos, Nigeria, the first girl (and among the eldest) in a family of seven children. Her father worked as a chief inspector of taxes with the Inland Revenue (posted at times in Lagos and Kano); her mother was an educationist who also worked with the Nigerian Air Force and as a caterer. She lost her father while in Form 2 (secondary school) and was raised primarily by her strict, disciplined mother, who emphasized hard work, early rising, and self-reliance. She attended St. Mary’s Private School in Lagos for primary education and Federal Government Girls College, Sagamu, for secondary school. She later earned a B.Sc. in Botany from the University of Jos, though she has noted she never pursued a career in the sciences and instead followed her interest in communication, media, and people.
CAREER
Inspired by international talk shows (notably Oprah Winfrey), Amata launched Inside Out with Agatha in 1997. The independent programme, which addressed social issues, family matters, youth concerns, domestic violence, child abuse, and civic problems, became one of Nigeria’s longest-running talk shows. Early recordings took place at the University of Lagos Law Faculty auditorium before moving to a dedicated studio. She has described the show as a platform for the “voice of the voiceless” and more of a vocation or activism than pure entertainment. After more than 20 years, she stepped back, citing generational shifts in communication styles. She founded Inside-Out Media Ltd, a media consultancy and production company. In 2014 she launched Rave TV, an interactive youth-oriented television channel available on platforms including GOtv, StarTimes, and others. She also established Trend FM 100.9 in Asaba, Delta State—the first private radio station in the state. Her company produces content for Africa Magic and other outlets (Rave Films). Amata has worked as a media consultant for companies, state governments, and parastatals, and she is a frequent speaker at national and international forums, including events at MIT, the Women Economic Forum, and youth empowerment conferences.
PERSONAL LIFE
Amata married Nollywood figure Fred Amata in the mid-1990s; the couple had two children—a son (Oreva, who studied economics and earned a master’s from the London School of Economics) and a daughter (Stephanie). The marriage ended around 2005 after roughly 19 years. She has spoken openly about focusing on her children and work afterward, stating she has not been in a hurry to remarry and prioritizes their well-being. Both children have reached adulthood; her daughter married in London, and her son has started a family. She maintains an amicable co-parenting relationship with her former husband. Amata is known for her strong personal values, integrity, and emphasis on discipline inherited from her upbringing.
Through the Inside-Out Foundation (and related initiatives such as FESECA – Foundation for Effective Socio-Economic Change in Africa), Amata supports widows, single mothers, and educational scholarships, running programmes like “Touch a Heart.” She has received numerous awards, including recognition for innovation and leadership (Women Economic Forum), Women in Journalism Africa, ELOY Awards (Ladies Who Inspire in the Media), Best TV Presenter, and special recognition awards for broadcasting and content creation. She is a member of professional bodies including the Electronic Media Content Owners Association of Nigeria (EMCOAN), Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), and Women in Management, Business and Public Service (WIMBIZ). Amata continues to advocate for craft mastery, proper English usage in broadcasting, youth empowerment, and responsible media.
