My Sunshine

Charis Benson prepares for a scholarship interview at Saint Paul's Baptist School, a Korean-run institution, while her mother reassures her with faith and reveals that Charis's late father was Korean and the opportunity would let her reclaim his language. At the Royal House of Faith church the pastor announces five winners and Charis is among them, embraced by her mother before she steps into a new academic world. On her first day she meets the warm but firm teacher Miss Kim, the enthusiastic owner Mr. Okafor, a friendly boy named Daniel, and a sharp-tongued classmate Yewande who immediately resents Charis's presence. In My Sunshine the school setting quickly becomes a place of both connection and conflict as Charis bonds with Daniel and Yewande's hostility grows. Charis settles into school life and forms a close bond with Daniel. Yewande's hostility escalates until she confronts Daniel about his attention toward Charis. Meanwhile Charis's relationship with Gerald fractures in a bathroom confrontation where Gerald admits he told peers they broke up though Charis believed they had agreed to wait, and he leaves with another student leaving Charis distressed. Later Charis visits Gerald's home with Daniel and a friend and they share a meal before playing rock-paper-scissors, Charis loses and washes dishes while Gerald corners her in the kitchen with charged proximity. Yewande secretly bribes a vote-rigger to secure the prom queen crown. Charis enjoys a spontaneous photography session with a young artist who insists she is photogenic. A study group with Tobe, Gerard, and Erica adds light comedic friction over project duties. Prom night arrives in a decorated ballroom where Charis dances with a young man who confesses his affection and apologizes for his cousin Gerald's behavior before asking her to be his girlfriend.
