Storyline

The film opens abruptly with tragedy: 12-year-old Chanda is forced to perform the heartbreaking task of selecting a coffin for her newborn baby sister, Sara. In the village of Elandsdoorn, high child mortality is common, but the underlying reason remains an unspoken taboo. Chanda’s mother, Lillian, plunges into severe depression and physical frailty, while her volatile stepfather, Jonah, squanders the coffin money on alcohol and flees the household. Chanda is left entirely alone to manage the funeral, keep her home together, and nurture her two younger, uncomprehending half-siblings, Iris and Soly. As Lillian's health deteriorates, the close-knit, prideful community turns cold and hostile. In a village where HIV/AIDS is viewed not as a medical condition but as a shameful curse, divine punishment, or the work of evil spirits, rumors spread like wildfire. Neighbors who were once friendly begin keeping their distance. The family's next-door neighbor and maternal figure, Mrs. Tafa, advises Chanda to keep her mother hidden away to avoid bringing "shame" to the neighborhood. Ultimately, a weakened Lillian agrees to "flee" to her home village under the guise of an extended rest. In a powerful act of defiance, Chanda brings her dying mother back to Elandsdoorn in an open cart. When an angry mob gathers outside their home, threatening to burn it down to rid the village of the disease, Chanda stands on the porch and confronts them directly. In the ultimate emotional climax, Mrs. Tafa breaks her silence, siding with Chanda and publicly confessing her own hidden grief. The community's collective wall of shame cracks open, transforming their hostility into a chorus of supportive song, granting Lillian a final moment of profound human dignity and peace before her passing.
