Biography

EARLY LIFE

Born on July 18, 1957, in Eziawa, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria, Alajemba has become a household name through his unique comedic style and memorable performances. Growing up in a modest family, Alajemba faced significant challenges during his formative years. The untimely death of his father in 1970 left the family in financial hardship, limiting his access to formal education. Consequently, he primarily communicates in Igbo and Pidgin English, as he did not receive extensive schooling in the English language. Before venturing into acting, Alajemba undertook various menial jobs to make ends meet. He served multiple apprenticeships, including as an 'igba boy' under four different masters, but faced challenges due to his assertive nature, which led to disputes. His journey took him to Akure, Ondo State, where he worked as a motorcycle taxi operator (okada rider), and later to Onitsha, Anambra State, where he became a wheelbarrow pusher at the motor park. His natural comedic talent shone during these times, entertaining those around him with his witty remarks.

CAREER

Stephen Alajemba, widely recognized by his stage name Uwaezuoke, is a veteran Nigerian actor and comedian renowned for his contributions to Nollywood, particularly in Igbo-language films. Alajemba’s transition into acting was serendipitous. A shop owner in Onitsha recognized his comedic potential and introduced him to the late Solomon Eze, also known as Mike Orihedimma, a pioneering producer of Igbo-language films. Impressed by Alajemba’s improvisational skills during an impromptu audition, Eze cast him in the film “Ụwaezuoke,” a role that would become his moniker. This breakthrough paved the way for a prolific career spanning over two decades, during which he appeared in more than 100 films. His filmography includes a variety of popular titles, such as: “Akidi,” “Nurse Eliza,” “Ụwaezuoke Togo,” “Akonauche,” “Ghana Banku,” “Shege Banza,” “Ihe Onye Metere,” “Ibezimaku,” “Okwute,” and “Mama Ekoo.” He has collaborated with icons like Pete Edochie, Nkem Owoh, and John Okafor (Mr. Ibu). His performances are characterized by his distinctive facial expressions, comedic timing, sturdy and stubborn on-screen persona, and love for fufu (akpu), often portraying characters that resonate with everyday experiences. Anajemba avoids roles involving kissing or intimate scenes with women, adhering to personal principles. Stephen Alajemba’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a celebrated figure in Nollywood exemplifies resilience and talent. His contributions have enriched Nigerian cinema, especially in promoting Igbo language and culture through film. His story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the possibilities that arise from perseverance and dedication.

PERSONAL LIFE

Alajemba is happily married and has children, though he maintains a private family life, seldom sharing personal details publicly and keeping them out of the public eye, avoiding flaunting family on social media. He has expressed reservations about his children pursuing acting careers, citing the industry’s challenges and the disparity between fame and financial stability, and has explicitly banned his children from pursuing acting, drawing from his own hardships. In 2017, Alajemba was involved in a dispute with New York-based Nollywood producer Shirley Ann. He allegedly brought his girlfriend to a film set without prior approval, leading to conflicts regarding accommodation and on-set conduct. The situation escalated, resulting in police intervention and legal actions initiated by Ann. In November 2024, Alajemba made headlines with his controversial views on marriage, asserting that it is a sin for a man to have fewer than three wives. He argued that having multiple wives reduces the risk of marital conspiracies, suggesting that with three or more wives, each would be independent, minimizing potential collusion against the husband. Alajemba has openly discussed the challenges he faced due to his physical appearance. He recounted experiences from his youth where women would avoid him because of his looks and stature. Despite these rejections, he found love and married at the age of 23. He also shared that as a baby, people hesitated to carry him, which deeply affected his mother. These experiences fueled his determination to succeed and make his mother proud. His humorous lines, like joking about women calling him a 'yellow man' after gaining wealth, have added to his controversial yet endearing persona.

Anajemba has faced controversies, notably in 2017 when New York-based producer Shirley Ann sued him over an on-set incident where he allegedly brought his girlfriend without approval, leading to disputes over accommodations and conduct; she even appealed to his children to intervene. His humorous lines, like joking about women calling him a "yellow man" after gaining wealth, have added to his controversial yet endearing persona. Recent social media mentions, such as a 2017 post about him sleeping at an event, highlight his relatable, down-to-earth image. At 68 years old as of 2025, he continues to embody resilience, from poverty to Nollywood veteran status
