Biography
EARLY LIFE
Chief Kehinde Segun Remi, fondly known as Chief Kanran, was born in 1953 in Keesi, Ogun State, Nigeria. His love for performance began in his childhood, when local dramas were staged during Easter and Christmas festivities. He studied at the Centre for Cultural Studies, University of Lagos (now Creative Arts Department), before proceeding to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), where he earned a diploma in directing, acting, and film production.
CAREER
Kanran's acting career officially began in 1975, spanning over five decades. He first gained recognition through community stage plays and later expanded his craft through professional training. After hosting a television programme on MTV in Lagos, he fully transitioned into filmmaking. His elder brother, Yemi Akiremi, also pursued a career in the arts as an actor, dancer, and drummer. Kanran's defining moments came with significant roles such as Kurunmi in Prof. Ola Rotimi’s play of the same title. He also appeared in the popular TV drama “Mirror in the Sun” and his portrayal of a businessman in the soap opera “Images”. A major career highlight was his role in Langbodo, Nigeria’s official drama entry to Festac ‘77. He featured in numerous Nollywood classics including Vigilante, Ose-Sango, Eri Okan, Itunnu, Eewo, Idunnu, Orire, Ofa Oro, Ajaka Oko, Great Bird of Eternity, Shattered Bridge, Oba Oluaiye, Bibi Ire, Ilu le, and I50 Million.
PERSONAL LIFE
Chief Kanran was married and enjoyed a committed family life until tragedy struck. His beloved wife passed away after a long battle with cancer. Outside acting, Chief Kanran served as a Primate in the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, a white garment Christian denomination. In 2017, Kanran suffered a devastating fire incident that destroyed his home, four cars, and valuable film equipment. He passed away on Friday morning, August 15, 2025.
