Biography
EARLY LIFE
Born in Lagos and hails from Omu Aran, Kwara State, Nigeria. Segun Adefila started acting and dancing as an itinerant masquerade performer in his community, especially during traditional festivals. This experience influenced his art as a performance artist with a remarkable awareness of the potency of the arts as a veritable tool for social rejuvenation. He had an informal training in theatre with Black Image Theatre Company.
CAREER
He became a co-founder and artistic director of the Crown Troupe of Africa, founded in June 1996 as a Dance Laboratory to dramatize Lagos, Nigeria as a modern cosmopolis. Adefila studied for a certificate in Drama from the Centre for Cultural Studies, University of Lagos in 1997 and later obtained his B.A (Second Class Upper Division) in Creative Arts from the same institution in 2002. Segun Adefila began to gain recognition as a performer while in school winning awards at both departmental and professional levels with the Crown Troupe. Some members of the group were invited by the National Troupe of Nigeria to perform at the maiden edition of Contacting The World, an international youth theatre festival hosted by Manchester based Contact Theatre in 2002, which was the group’s first international exposure overseas. The artist has worked extensively in the integrated arts of dance, drama, music and visual arts and has created award winning works with his group of young theatre makers. He has been invited to work with young people at home and abroad. His international credits include: 2002-Choreographer- ‘La Pucelle’, Theatre Nomad, London; 2003-Collaborative workshop, Arts-In-Action, University of West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago; 2004-Devised and directed ‘Ladugbo’ performed by Nigerian based Ancient Theatre; 2005-Dance Workshop Facilitator, London Autumn International Workshop Festival; 2006-Professional Development Programme, Contacting The World, Contact Theatre, Manchester; 2008-Devised and directed ‘Caught In The Middle’ with Contact Young Actors Company, Manchester; 2010-Directed Noel Greig’s ‘Whispers In The Dark’- National Troupe of Nigeria’s entry at the 2010 edition of Cairo International Experimental Theatre Festival; 2010- Performer, Staat Theatre (Performance Art), Frankfurt, Germany; 2011- Dance-theatre workshop facilitator, Durban South Africa (BornTroway Project); 2012- Group exhibition, SurviveArt Project, Berlin, Germany; 2012- Group exhibition- Lagos Photos; 2012- Residency, Rivers of Life Project, Maraba, Brazil; 2013- Dance Coordinator, The Lagos Black Heritage Festival; 2013- Facilitator, Physical Theatre Workshop, Barefeet Festival, Lusaka, Zambia. His play Golden Fleece has been published by the Royal Court Theatre in their New Writing in Drama Project (An Anthology). He is the subject matter of a multiple award winning documentary ‘Bariga Boy’ by foremost Nigerian film maker Femi Odugbemi.
