He left Ireland on 12 August 1964 and moved to Scotland to be reunited with his mother and stepfather, William Carmichael. They later moved back to London, where he attended Elliott School. After leaving school at 16, he initially pursued a career as a painter, training in commercial illustration at Saint Martin's School of Art in London. He then trained for three years as an actor at the Drama Centre London, graduating in 1975.
