Nyokabi Macharia

EARLY LIFE

Nyokabi Macharia was born and raised in Nakuru, Kenya, in a family of four (two children). Her mother was a teacher and her father a car dealer. She has described an average household where her mother created a positive environment and never made the family feel poor, using the phrase “SAP” (structural adjustment program) during tough times to empower resilience. Her sister is a significant support (graceful and never misses her performances despite not enjoying theatre). She attended Carol Academy for primary school, where drama teacher Mr. Wenslauce Masinde strongly influenced her interest in theatre. She continued at Moi Forces Academy, Lanet, for secondary education, actively participating in Kenya National Drama Festivals and developing professionalism (focusing on winning rather than socialising at festivals). Early on she considered law (inspired by lawyer neighbours) but shifted toward performance. She was active in school extracurriculars including plays, concerts, and musicals.

CAREER

Nyokabi Macharia is an award-winning Kenyan actress, director, and producer known for versatile, physically and vocally demanding roles across stage, screen, and voice work. She describes herself as a polymath who thrives under pressure and juggles multiple projects. Education & Training: After Daystar University (Public Relations, 2017; limited formal PR practice but gained events and band-management experience), she pursued musical theatre training. Early UK trip (2017–2018) included an internship at Omnibus Theatre (The London Eye). She later earned her MA at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (Musical Theatre), studying through COVID remote learning. She has performed at Kenya National Theatre, New Victory Theatre (New York), Club Silly, and Theatre 503 (London). Theatre: Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar (Nairobi Performing Arts Studio / Kenya National Theatre, 2017). Multiple roles (including Mekatilili wa Menza) in Too Early for Birds: Brazen Edition (2018; all-women ensemble retelling Kenyan women’s history). Giraffe in Tinga Tinga the Musical / Tinga Tinga Tales (2018; ran at New Victory Theatre, New York; well-paid and structured experience). One-woman show Actors Anonymous (2021, livestream; critical acclaim in London). Directed/produced A Book and Its Cover (COVID-era Frankenstein adaptation with female cast). PERSONAL LIFE

Nyokabi keeps her romantic life private. She journals regularly (over eight years) and reflects on personal growth by revisiting past entries. She has spoken openly about financial struggles in the arts and the importance of saving (lessons from her mother). Faith, self-affirmation (not relying solely on external praise), sensitivity in feedback, and continuous growth feature in her reflections. She returned to Kenya after her UK studies and continues balancing creative work with personal development. She has celebrated a decade in acting with projects reflecting her journey.

She advocates for better structures and pay for artists and continues mentoring/collaborating across borders. Her journey reflects resilience—from unpaid early gigs and financial lows to international training, Kalasha recognition, Netflix/Showmax credits, and producing. She remains based in Nairobi, available for work, and focused on growth, cultural exchange, and authentic storytelling.
