Biography

EARLY LIFE

Mary Remy Njoku was born in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos State, as the sixth of eight children in her family. She is originally from Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria. Growing up in Mile 2 Estate, Mary showed an early passion for creative arts, which her family encouraged. She attended Amuwo Odofin High School, National College Bagada, and Navy Town Secondary School, where she began acting in school plays. Mary holds a diploma in Computer Science and later pursued a degree in English Language at Lagos State University in 2010. In 2012, she attended the London Film Academy, where she studied Producing, Movie Magic Budgeting, and Scheduling, thanks to the support of her husband.

CAREER

Mary entered Nollywood in 2003 at the age of 17, making her debut in the movie Home Sickness, alongside Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha. She rose to prominence in 2011 with her role in the blockbuster Blackberry Babes, which became a cultural sensation. Over the years, she has acted in numerous films, including: Ada Mbano (2014) Thy Will Be Done (2015) Ward 305 (2016) Nwanyioma (2018) Ojukwu (2018) The African Couple (2019) In 2023, she co-created the movie Dr. Love with Uche Jombo, showcasing her collaborative spirit and innovation. In 2013, Mary founded ROK Studios, which quickly grew to become a powerhouse in Nollywood, producing over 540 films and 25 original TV series, such as: Festac Town Single Ladies Body Language Husbands of Lagos ROK Studios expanded globally with the launch of ROK on Sky in the UK in 2016, followed by ROK on DSTV across Africa. In 2018, she launched additional channels—ROK2, ROK3, and ROKGH—to cater to diverse audiences, including Ghanaian viewers. In 2019, French media giant Canal+ acquired ROK Studios in a landmark deal, one of the largest media acquisitions in Sub-Saharan Africa. Mary was retained as Managing Director, with Canal+ granting her creative autonomy. Mary, alongside her husband Jason Njoku and business partner Bastian Gotter, launched Spark, a $2 million investment vehicle for Lagos-based startups in 2013. This venture aimed to foster tech and creative innovation in Nigeria.

PERSONAL LIFE

Mary is married to Jason Njoku, a British-born Nigerian entrepreneur and founder of iROKOtv, a leading streaming platform for Nollywood content. They tied the knot on August 18, 2012, in Festac Town, Lagos. Their marriage is celebrated as a partnership bridging entertainment and tech industries. Together, they have three children: Jason Obinna Njoku (born July 30, 2013), Nwakaego Annabelle Njoku (born August 24, 2015), and Amber Nnenna Njoku (born August 4, 2017). Mary often credits her husband’s unwavering support as instrumental in her success, and the couple is known for their dedication to family and career. Despite being a public figure, Mary values her privacy and prioritizes her family life. Mary has been vocal about sexual harassment in Nollywood, stating, “Nobody can harass you without your consent. If you stand firm, no one can take advantage of you.” She credits her strong moral compass and upbringing for helping her navigate industry challenges. She insists she has never been heartbroken from past relationships, believing “A man cannot hurt you unless you allow him to. If a relationship ends, it simply means he wasn’t meant for you.” Mary faced rumors regarding her relationship before marriage but focused on building a stable home with her husband.
