Biography

EARLY LIFE

James Ngcobo trained with Kwa-Zulu Natal's Loft Theatre Company, appearing in productions such as La Ronde, Mujaji, Horn of Sorrow, and Jesus Christ Superstar. He also worked with Theatre For Africa in various productions including Gone by the Wind and Kwamanzi. He later moved to Johannesburg.

CAREER

James Ngcobo is an award-winning actor and multi-award-winning director. As an actor, he is known for his roles as editor Joe Dlamini on the SABC3 drama series 'Hard Copy' (2005) and as Mojo Khumalo on the SABC2 sitcom 'Stokvel' (2003-2008 and 2010). He has performed internationally, including at London's Young Vic in 'The Revolution', touring the United States in 'The Horn of Sorrow', and touring Britain in 'The Cherry Orchard', as well as performing in 'SizwaBanzi is Dead' at Britain's Festival Hall. His stage roles include Jacob in 'La Cage aux Folles' (for which he won an award for best actor in a comedy) and Estragon in 'Waiting for Godot'. Other theatre productions include 'Glass Roots', 'The Pen', 'Green Man Flashing', and 'A Whole in One'. His television credits also include 'Schoop Schoombie', 'Yizo Yizo', 'Jozi Streets', 'Soul City', '90 Plein Street', and the 1999 mini-series 'Saints, Sinners And Settlers'. In film, he has appeared in 'I Dreamed of Africa', 'Mr Bones', 'Man to Man' (2005), 'Red Dust' (2004), and 'Lucky' (2011). As a director, he has created a new vision for staging works at the Market Theatre, where he has been instrumental in introducing Black History Month Celebrations to South African audiences. He wrote and directed 'Songs of Migration' with Hugh Masekela and Sibongile Khumalo, adapted E'skia Mphahlele's short story 'The Suitcase', and directed 'The Children's Monologues'. He served as creative director for the 2019 Presidential Inauguration on Africa Day. Under his directorship, the Market Theatre launched its first online theatre season 'Ditshomo' in 2020 and the 'Salute the Playwright' season in 2021, and he initiated indigenous language programming in 2015.
