EARLY LIFE

Isaach de Bankolé was born Zachari Bankolé on August 12, 1957, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, to ethnic Yoruba parents originally from Benin (with grandparents from Nigeria). He grew up immersed in Ivorian culture during a period when Abidjan was a vibrant hub. In 1975, he moved to Paris, France, to complete his final year of lycée (high school). He initially pursued scientific studies, earning a master’s degree in physics and mathematics from the University of Paris. He also trained at aviation school and obtained a private pilot’s license. A chance encounter with director Gérard Vergez led him to enroll at the Cours Simon drama school, where he discovered his passion for acting and shifted his career path toward the performing arts.

Isaach de Bankolé is a highly respected Ivorian actor with a prolific career spanning French cinema, American independent films, international blockbusters, television, and theater. He made his film debut in the mid-1980s and gained early acclaim for his role in Black Mic Mac (1986), winning the César Award for Most Promising Actor in 1987. His breakthrough international role came as Protée in Claire Denis’s Chocolat (1988), which brought him widespread recognition. On television, he has portrayed memorable characters such as President Ule Matobo in 24 (2008–2009), Father Obosi in The Sopranos, and recurring roles in series like Godfather of Harlem and Silo. His theater work includes productions directed by Patrice Chéreau and performances at prestigious venues like Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers and New York Theatre Workshop. In addition to acting, he has worked as a producer and director on select projects, including documentaries tied to his personal connections (e.g., related to Cassandra Wilson). In 2007, he was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur by the French government for his contributions to cinema.
