Biography

EARLY LIFE

Grace Oboba Edwin-Okon was born on August 9, 1982. She grew up with a strong interest in television and storytelling from childhood, often recalling old programs that captured her attention. Her family and friends nicknamed her “Fulani” because of her beauty, even though she is not from the North. Her mother, who enjoyed pageantry, encouraged her participation after an injury, telling her she had “injured [herself] now, and [she] would not be Miss Nigeria again,” which planted the seed for a career in modeling and entertainment. An aunt, Joy Nwariso (formerly Miss UNIPORT), also encouraged her involvement in pageants. She studied English at Delta State University, where she won the Miss Face of Delta State University title as an undergraduate and became involved in modeling and campus activities. She later pursued additional training in England related to her interests in production and decoration. From a young age, she was drawn to the arts, and her early experiences in pageantry and writing as a hobby in secondary school shaped her path into entertainment and storytelling.

CAREER

Grace Edwin-Okon is a veteran Nigerian actress, producer, scriptwriter, author, and filmmaker with a career spanning over 25 years since entering the industry around 1998/1999. She began as a model and beauty queen, winning Miss Face of Delta State University and placing as second runner-up in the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) pageant in 1999. This platform helped build her confidence and served as a “launching pad” for her entertainment career. She transitioned into acting, featuring in films and soap operas such as Tears in Heaven, Extreme Measures, My Dream, Prodigal Brother, and Doctors’ Quarters. Her first on-set experience was on a Zeb Ejiro film, where she unexpectedly secured a lead role while accompanying a friend to an audition. Dissatisfied with available scripts, she took a break from acting to pursue scriptwriting and film production, influenced by producers like Emem Isong. She has written over 50 screenplays (with more than 10 produced into films) and authored books, including one tied to her film Happy Beauty (her most precious work, about an 18-year-old girl who gets pregnant while preparing for a beauty pageant). She also has another book in progress, focusing on inspiring stories for young people and teenagers to foster a reading culture. Her writing journey began in the 1990s. As a producer and director, her credits include Never Saw It Coming (2019, director and producer), When Star Cross (2021, director and producer), The Widow of Nkanu, The Mirror, Jaguna’s Heart, Excess Luggage (2017), The Spell, and others. She has produced social impact films, commercial projects, documentaries, and animation through Derwin Productions. She founded and serves as CEO of Derwin Film Academy and Derwin Productions, a film school and creative firm that has trained over 1,000 young Nigerians (many on fully funded scholarships) in filmmaking, with a focus on empowering women behind the camera. The academy partners with organizations like LSETF, UNDP, USADF, UKAID, and ITF. She also leads the Pix-Her Africa initiative, training young girls in photography, makeup, and all aspects of filmmaking (directing, scripting, acting, special effects) with hands-on experience on sets. In 2018/2019 (around the time of her election), she became the first female Vice President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) in its over 25-year history. She is passionate about addressing the low number of women behind the camera in Nollywood, advocating for better distribution and streaming platforms, and creating employment in the “orange economy.” She views Nollywood as unique because anyone can enter at any age and emphasizes believing in one’s dreams and God-given gifts. Her work often highlights cultural stories and social impact, and she continues to mentor, produce, and push for industry growth.

PERSONAL LIFE

Grace Edwin-Okon is married to Alex Edwin-Okon. She has been open about balancing marriage and career, noting that her husband has been supportive of her acting and production work, including providing financial help for her first movie. She has children and has spoken about focusing on raising them during periods away from the screen. She describes herself as a happy, down-to-earth, God-fearing woman who lives a simple life, loves being around beautiful people, and prefers uncomplicated things. Her faith and family values are central, and she emphasizes integrity, humility, and kindness. She maintains close ties to her heritage and has earned respect from traditional institutions. Her personal journey reflects resilience, having navigated industry challenges, family responsibilities, and a commitment to empowering others, particularly young women in filmmaking.

Grace Edwin-Okon is a multitalented figure in Nigerian entertainment and education, blending acting, production, writing, and advocacy. She is the founder and CEO of Derwin Film Academy and Derwin Productions, focusing on training, social impact content, and empowering the next generation of filmmakers—especially women. She has been recognized as People Producer of the Year and remains active in the industry while balancing family and professional commitments. Her philosophy centers on integrity, hard work, and using her platform to uplift others without expecting rewards.
