He began his formal education at St. Patrick’s School, Awka (1958–1965), and proceeded to Zik’s College, Onitsha (1966–1971). In 1971, he gained admission into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), graduating in 1975 with a degree in English, focusing on Dramatic Arts. Furthering his education, he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Administration and Planning from the University of Jos in 1977. He later moved abroad for advanced studies, obtaining a Master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University and a Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University in the United States.

CAREER

Nwabueze began his academic career in 1978 as a lecturer during his NYSC at the Kano State Institute for Higher Education. In the early 1980s, while in the United States, he served as Associate Professor and Chairman of Humanities at Edward Waters College, Jacksonville, Florida. In 1983, he returned to Nigeria upon invitation from his alma mater, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. There, he rose through the academic ranks: Lecturer II (1983), Lecturer I (1985), Senior Lecturer (1987), and full Professor (1996). In 2023, he was named the first Emeritus Professor of Theatre and Film Studies at UNN. He delivered his inaugural lecture on June 30, 2000, titled “In the Spirit of Thespis: The Theatre Arts and National Integration”, discussing theatre's origins, its development in Nigeria, and its potential for fostering national unity. Visiting Professorships include: University of Swaziland (Eswatini), Randolph-Macon College – Quillian Visiting International Professor (1999–2000), University of Trinidad and Tobago – Founding Professor of Theatre (2008–2011), Imo State University, Owerri, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo. Research Contributions: Nwabueze is renowned for his critical work on African theatre, especially the Igbo masquerade drama. In “Igbo Masquerade Drama and the Origin of Theatre: A Comparative Synthesis”, he challenges Western-centric narratives, arguing for the recognition of African performance traditions as complex and theatrical. His essay, “Theoretical Construction and Constructive Theorising on the Execution of Ikemefuna in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart” (published in Research in African Literatures), introduced the concept of critical dualism, interpreting Okonkwo’s actions as both divine ordination and psychological compulsion. His plays, such as Spokesman for the Oracle and The Dragon’s Funeral, integrate Igbo culture, cosmology, and values. His satirical play A Parliament of Vultures critiques political corruption in Nigeria. He also advocates for professional standards and theoretical grounding in theatre production. Film Career: Directorial Works: The Carcass (2005), The Super Star (2008), The Super Star 2 (2008). Acting Roles: My Father’s Love – alongside Kenneth Okonkwo, Eucharia Anunobi, No More War – with Pete Edochie, Muna Obiekwe, Rising Moon (2005) – starred as Igwe; won six AMAA awards, The Niger Mission – with Prof. Lazarus Ekwueme, Spokesman for the Oracle – adaptation of his own play. He emphasized character realism, proper roleplay, and cultural authenticity in all his screen performances and productions. Industry Impact: Nwabueze was an early influencer in Nollywood’s evolution, contributing as a director, scriptwriter, and actor from 1992 to 2011. His work laid foundational structures for professionalism and quality in the Nigerian film industry.
