Biography

EARLY LIFE

Elsie Olusola was born in 1954 in Greek Town, Calabar, into an Efik family. She had strong ties to her Itsekiri mother, who was based in Warri. From a young age, she showed great talent in languages and performance. She trained at the prestigious Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in Britain, where she sharpened her acting and broadcasting skills. She was a gifted linguist who spoke Efik, Itsekiri, Igbo, Yoruba, Urhobo, English, and German fluently.

CAREER

Elsie Olusola was a pioneer in Nigerian television and drama. She worked as a producer at WNBC/WNTV Ibadan from 1960 and wrote her first play, Manhood Symbolic, which was staged during Nigeria’s independence celebrations. She freelanced for the BBC African Desk and Voice of America before focusing on Nigerian broadcasting. She became widely loved for her iconic role as Sisi Clara (Clara Fagade), the Headmaster’s wife, in the classic TV series The Village Headmaster. The show, created by her husband Segun Olusola, ran from 1968 to 1988 and remains one of Nigeria’s longest-running and most influential television dramas. Her performance brought grace, wisdom, and strength to the character, making her a household name across the country. She also appeared in other productions, including the 1965 film Taiwo Shango.

PERSONAL LIFE

Elsie married Chief Segun Olusolain the early 1960s. Their marriage was a strong creative partnership. They had three children together: Ronke, Jimi, and Toyin. Elsie was known as a strong-willed, independent, and socially active woman. She passed away on 4 July 1991 at the age of 37 while her husband was serving as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ethiopia. Her death was a great loss to her family and the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Elsie is remembered as one half of a powerful creative couple that helped shape early Nigerian television. Her husband later established a prize for Television Drama in her memory. She contributed greatly to cultural storytelling and excellence in broadcasting during Nigeria’s post-independence era.
