EARLY LIFE
Ekene Cynthia Umenwa was born on August 27, 1991, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. She hails from the Igbo ethnic group and is originally from Anambra State. Her parents, Dozie Umenwa and Lucy Ogoamaka Umenwa, raised her alongside two sisters: Kate Martins (born on February 21, 1993, an entrepreneur and trained lawyer, CEO of Kayna Fruits and More) and Somto Umenwa (a businesswoman, brand ambassador, and face model, owns "Tees by Sommie"). Ekene pursued higher education at Ebonyi State University, where she graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry.
CAREER
Ekene’s foray into the entertainment industry began in 2011 with a minor role as a maid in the film "King After Kings," starring Kenneth Okonkwo and Maureen Solomon. Her breakthrough came in 2013 with the movie "Black Choir," which she filmed while still in university. After a brief hiatus to focus on her studies, she returned to acting in 2016 and has since appeared in numerous films and TV shows, including: "Innocent Oath" (2018), a thriller where she starred alongside Yul Edochie; "Money and Blood" (2022), a drama series that delves into the complexities of wealth and familial ties; "The Cab Ladies" (2021), a TV series portraying the lives of female cab drivers navigating societal challenges. PERSONAL LIFE
Ekene’s personal life has been a subject of public interest: She married Alex Ifeanyi Ogbodo, also known as Alex Kleanson, on April 16, 2023. Alex is a film producer, realtor, and entrepreneur, serving as the General Manager of Firstnollytv and CEO of Kleanson Concept, a movie production company. The couple relocated to the United Kingdom in early 2024. They welcomed their first child in September 2024. Ekene shared the news on her Instagram page on September 2, 2024. Ekene has been involved in a few controversies: Wedding Reception Incident (April 2023): During her wedding reception, gospel singer Moses Bliss made an unexpected appearance.
