Biography
EARLY LIFE
Dika Ofoma grew up in Gombe, northern Nigeria, in a middle-class neighborhood. His father maintained a small library, and he was exposed to stories from Shakespeare before he could read. He consumed various books and watched Hollywood, Bollywood, and Nollywood films, often re-enacting them with his cousins. Despite excelling in mathematics and sciences, even representing his school in competitions, he chose the arts track in senior secondary school. He initially aimed to study Law but enrolled in History and International Studies at Imo State University after his chosen university lost its accreditation for Law. He viewed his university education primarily as a means to obtain a degree, with his true passion lying in Theatre Arts.
CAREER
Dika Ofoma began his career freelancing as a pop culture writer. In 2020, he committed to learning filmmaking, teaching himself through resources like Celtx, screenwriting books by Syd Field and Robert McKee, and YouTube tutorials. His unofficial directorial debut was the short film 'Soma,' which he shot on a friend's phone. His work caught the attention of award-winning producer Jade Osiberu, leading to his first professional screenwriting job in Lagos. His 2022 short film, 'The Way Things Happen,' garnered significant recognition, and acclaimed director CJ Obasi encouraged him to pursue film festivals for distribution. 'A Japa Tale' premiered at the S16 Film Festival and later achieved viral success on YouTube. By 2023, Ofoma had established himself as a meticulous storyteller focusing on everyday life. Unconventionally, he built his filmmaking career in Enugu, outside of Lagos. He is currently working on his first documentary, commissioned to explore Enugu's creative and tech communities. His early films were self-funded, utilizing borrowed equipment and collaborative efforts with friends. Today, he works with professional crews and actors, managing larger budgets.
PERSONAL LIFE
Dika Ofoma is passionate about crafting nuanced, human-centric stories that reflect Nigerian life and culture. He experienced what he describes as an 'Igbo awakening' upon moving to the Southeast for university, which deepened his interest in Igbo culture and his identity as an Igbo person within Nigeria. He expresses a desire to continue telling stories that resonate with him personally and aims to evolve as a filmmaker without losing the initial motivations that led him into the craft. As of October 29, 2025, he is 25 years old.
