Biography
EARLY LIFE
Daniel Oriahi grew up in a small town (Ewu) in Edo State, Nigeria. His father worked as an engineer for a German company, so the family lived in staff quarters with access to satellite TV. This exposure to international films, especially Steven Spielberg’s movies and behind-the-scenes documentaries in the mid-1990s, sparked his passion for filmmaking at around age 13. He faced challenges in his teenage years and early adulthood, including a period of juvenile delinquency and a brief psychotic disorder in his mid-20s, which he later described as a turning point that pushed him toward filmmaking as a form of therapy.
CAREER
Daniel Oriahi is one of Nigeria’s respected directors known for blending commercial Nollywood storytelling with stronger cinematic quality, especially in the thriller genre. He is the Founder and CEO of House5 Productions in Lagos. Notable Works, Taxi Driver: Oko Ashewo (2015), Sylvia (2018), The Weekend (2024), The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives (upcoming 2026). Other works include many Nollywood features, TV content, and music videos. He started directing after film school and has built a career directing both mainstream commercial films and more ambitious, festival-bound projects. He is recognized for elevating Nollywood storytelling with better character development, suspense, and international appeal.
PERSONAL LIFE
Daniel keeps most of his personal life private. He was previously married to Nollywood actress and producer Ijeoma Grace Agu. The couple had a daughter together, but the marriage ended in divorce after about 10 years. He has spoken openly about using filmmaking to process personal trauma and his experiences growing up.
Daniel is vocal about the need for better story development, a Nigerian film market, and creating space for alternative cinema within Nollywood. He continues to mentor and push for growth in the industry.
