EARLY LIFE
Columbus Irosanga was born and raised in Okrika, a historic town in Rivers State, Nigeria, in the heart of the Niger Delta. He came from the Ijaw ethnic group and grew up proud of his cultural roots, which later became a big part of his work. From a young age, he showed strong interest in theatre, storytelling, and performance — common in communities rich with traditional festivals and oral history. He pursued formal education in Theatre Arts and went on to earn a PhD, becoming a respected academic. This educational background set him apart from many actors of his time. He combined deep knowledge of drama and performance with practical experience, later teaching and mentoring young actors at the university level. Columbus Irosanga had a remarkable dual career as both a veteran Nollywood actor and a senior lecturer in Theatre Arts. He was best known for his powerful portrayals of native doctors, chief priests, and traditional figures in Nollywood films. His most iconic role was as “Igbudu” in the 2001 blockbuster Isakaba (sometimes referred to as Issakaba), where he played a native doctor. This role made him a household name across Nigeria and beyond. Other notable films include 7 Kilometre (2015), Otondo, Dons in Abuja, and Amanyanabo: The Eagle King. He also appeared in projects like Eyes of the Gods, further cementing his reputation for authentic and commanding performances in cultural and spiritual roles. Dr. Columbus Irosanga was a family man who was married and had children. He was survived by his wife and children after his passing. He lived a life rooted in his Ijaw heritage and was known as a proud son of the Niger Delta. Beyond his public roles, he was respected for his calm, wise, and cultured personality — qualities that came through in both his acting and his work as a lecturer. He used his position to promote Ijaw culture and Nigerian traditions, often involving his community in film projects. One example is the film Amanyanabo: The Eagle King, which was recorded in his own village of Okrika. This showed his commitment to preserving and showcasing local stories and history.
