Biography

EARLY LIFE

Chiké Okonkwo was born on 18 March 1982 in Kingston upon Thames, England. Of Nigerian descent, both of his parents hail from the Igbo ethnic group in southeastern Nigeria, shaping his dual British-Nigerian heritage and cultural identity from an early age. He grew up in a vibrant Nigerian household in southwest London, residing on a council estate in Kingston alongside his siblings. His family maintained strong ties to their Igbo roots, creating an environment rich in cultural practices and familial support. Okonkwo's mother played a pivotal role in exposing him and his siblings to the arts, regularly taking them to museums and theaters in London. These outings cultivated an early awareness of creativity and social justice through performance and visual arts. At age six, he was particularly enchanted by a pantomime show. Okonkwo attended Tolworth Infants and Juniors School, followed by Southborough High School in Kingston upon Thames. Despite developing a strong passion for acting, he prioritized academic stability, declining offers from leading UK drama schools to focus on higher education. In 2003, Okonkwo graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Business Computing from the University of Surrey.

CAREER

While studying computing, Okonkwo was selected for the BBC's New Talent Drama Scheme in 2001, leading to his debut television role in Holby City. He trained at the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain and the National Youth Music Theatre. He began his professional stage career with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre. His screen debut came in 2005 with small roles in Derailed and Spirit Trap. Okonkwo's television career includes roles as PC Clark in New Tricks (2008–2009), DC Callum Gada in Paradox (2009), Lee Truitt in Being Mary Jane (2016–2019), and Ty Coleman in La Brea (2021–2024). His film breakthrough was as Will in The Birth of a Nation (2016). He also appeared in Burning Sands (2017) and Blindfire (2020). Okonkwo expanded into voice work as Besteel in the Apple TV+ animated series WondLa (2024), a character in the podcast Sacrilege: Curse of the Mbirwi (2025), and as Tom Buchanan in the BBC Radio 3 audio drama Gatsby in Harlem (2025). He voiced Sergeant Arthur Kingsley in Call of Duty: Vanguard (2021), the first Black lead character with a full storyline in the franchise, and Prospero in Anthem (2019), with additional roles in Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017) and Killzone: Mercenary (2013).
