Biography
EARLY LIFE
Chike Nwoffiah was born on July 22, 1965, in Nigeria. He attended Government College, Umuahia, and the University of Lagos. From an early age, he developed a passion for the performing arts, starring in his first stage play around age four.
CAREER
Nwoffiah immigrated to the United States in 1988 as an international student. He initially pursued a career in biotechnology after earning a master's degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Business. However, due to his dissatisfaction with stereotypical portrayals of Africa in Western media, he left the biotechnology industry in 1995 to immerse himself in the arts. In 1992, he co-founded Oriki Theatre in Mountain View, California. He directed documentaries for PBS, including 'Growing Black in America' (2000). In 2009, he founded the Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SVAFF) and serves as its executive director, promoting authentic African narratives. He is also the president of Rhesus Media Group, a founding partner of the Africa Film Fund, and has served as an adjunct faculty member at Menlo College. Nwoffiah has been a vocal advocate for the decolonization of African storytelling, emphasizing cultural authenticity. He has held positions as Creative Ambassador for the City of San José, Board President of the Alliance for California Traditional Arts (ACTA), and a member of the Advisory Board for the Entertainment Network for African International (ENFAI).
