Biography
EARLY LIFE
Ayobami Akinwale, known as Ayo Akinwale, was born in 1946 in Ibadan, Southern Region, British Nigeria (now Oyo State, Nigeria). He attended Methodist High School and Molusi College, Ijebu-Igbo, where he was a Senior Prefect. Although a science student, his artistic versatility led him to be a regular member of his schools' Dramatic Societies. He later studied at the University of Ibadan, where he obtained a Diploma, first degree, second degree, and Ph.D. from the Department of Theatre Arts.
CAREER
Ayo Akinwale began his acting career in the 1960s, debuting in television drama in 1964 and acting in Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunmole in 1966. He worked with theatre ensembles like the Nigerian Showcase Ensemble and Alebiosu Theatre. He joined the University of Ilorin in 1985, serving as a lecturer, and later as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Culture. He was also the chairman of the Oyo State Council for Arts and Culture and a judge at various cultural festivals. He was a prolific actor, producer, and academic, and won the Best Indigenous Actor award at the 4th Africa Movie Academy Awards. His filmography includes 'Sango' (1997), 'Afonja' (2002), 'Ladepo Omo Adanwo' (2005), 'Iranse Aje' (2007), 'Atanpako otun' (2007), 'Eti Keta' (2011), 'The Bridge' (2017), and 'Diamonds In The Sky' (2019).
