EARLY LIFE

Philip Alexander Gibney was born on October 23, 1953, in New York City. He is the son of Harriet (Harvey) and journalist Frank Gibney, and stepson of William Sloane Coffin. He attended Pomfret School, earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University, and later attended the UCLA Film School. He developed an anti-authoritarian view from his father and stepfather.

CAREER

Alex Gibney is an American documentary film director, producer, and writer. Esquire magazine described him as 'becoming the most important documentarian of our time.' His works as a director include 'The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley' (2019), 'Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief' (2015), 'We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks' (2013), 'Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God' (2012), 'Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room' (2005), 'Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer' (2010), 'Casino Jack and the United States of Money' (2010), and 'Taxi to the Dark Side' (2007). He also directed 'Citizen K' (2019) about Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mikhail Khodorkovsky. He served as executive producer of 'No End in Sight' (2007) and directed 'Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson' (2008). Gibney was a series producer for the PBS television series 'The Blues' (2003) and writer-producer of 'The Pacific Century' (1992), which won a News & Documentary Emmy for Outstanding Historical Program. His films have been screened at the Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, and Tribeca Film Festivals. He is president of Jigsaw Productions, which received an investment from Imagine Entertainment. He has been honored by the Yale Film Studies program and was listed by Utne Reader as one of '25 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World.' He received the inaugural Hitchens Prize in 2015. His recent projects include 'The Armstrong Lie' (2013), 'Catching Hell' (2011), 'Dirty Money' (2018), and 'The Looming Tower' (2018). In 2023, he released a two-part documentary 'Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker' and announced a documentary on Elon Musk called 'Musk.' He is also working on a documentary about Luigi Mangione. Gibney writes for The Atlantic, Huffington Post, and other publications. Gibney crossed over into Nigerian historical storytelling by directing and producing Finding Fela (2014). The feature-length documentary chronicled the life, music, and sociopolitical impact of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti and his revolutionary fight against the dictatorial Nigerian military regimes

PERSONAL LIFE

Alex Gibney has been a resident of Summit, New Jersey, and as of 2025, lives in New Harbor, Maine. He married Anne Gibney on August 14, 1982, and they have three children.
