EARLY LIFE
Alex Boyé was born in London, England, on 16 August 1970 to Nigerian parents. His mother went to London while pregnant, and his father remained in Nigeria. Boyé never knew his father. His mother remarried and worked for the London Underground. He was raised in the Tottenham neighborhood and spent much of his youth in foster homes with Caucasian parents. As a teenager, he was influenced by African-American artists like Stevie Wonder and James Brown. At age 16, while working at McDonald's, he was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was baptized. He first performed publicly as an LDS Church missionary in Bristol, England.
CAREER
After his mission, Boyé became a backup dancer for George Michael. In 1995, he formed and became the lead singer of Awesome, a European boy band. They won a vocal competition, signed with Universal Records, and released three singles that made top-10 charts across Europe, selling 500,000 albums. Boyé left Awesome in 1999 to pursue a solo career, later forming 'Soul Saints' which performed LDS Church hymns with a pop/R&B spin. In 2000, he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, and released his first religious album, 'The Love Goes On', in 2001. He acted in theatre and film, including roles in 'Civil War' and 'David and Goliath'. In 2006, he joined the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and continued his solo career. He gained significant attention in 2012 with his 'Africanized' cover of Coldplay's 'Paradise' (Peponi) with The Piano Guys, which went viral. In 2014, his Africanized tribal version of 'Let It Go' with the One Voice Children's Choir also went viral and was named YouTube's best pop cover of 2014. He has appeared on America's Got Talent and continued to release music and act in films like 'Saints and Soldiers: The Void' and 'Saturday's Warrior'.
PERSONAL LIFE
Boyé met his wife, Julie, in an LDS Church singles ward and they married in the Salt Lake Temple on 6 January 2007. They have eight children. In 2009, he raised money for a refugee family with sales of his single 'Crazy for You'. On 22 February 2012, Boyé became a United States citizen in Salt Lake City, where he was invited to sing 'The Star-Spangled Banner'.
