Biography

EARLY LIFE

Adebayo Mosobalaje Faleti was born on December 26, 1921, in Agbo-Oye, Oyo State, Nigeria. He was the first son of Joseph Akanbi Faleti and the only child of Durowade Ayinke Faleti. His parents could not fund his education, so he put his primary education on hold. He worked for six years in a primary school to raise funds for his secondary schooling. In 1949, he founded the Oyo Youth Operatic Society, his own successful theatre group. He later attended the University of Dakar in Senegal in 1966, obtaining a Certificate of proficiency in French Language and Civilization. Two years later, he graduated from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, with an honors degree in Lit-in-English. In 1971, he received a certificate in Television Production from the Radio Netherlands Training Center in Hilversum, the Netherlands.

CAREER

Adebayo Faleti was Africa's first newscaster, Africa's first stage play director, Nigeria's first film editor and librarian with the first television station in Africa - Western Nigeria Television (WNTV). He was also Nigeria's first Yoruba presenter on television and radio. He was a Nigerian poet, journalist, writer, Nollywood film director, and actor. He was also known as a Yoruba translator, a broadcaster, and a TV exponent. He was the first school teacher at Ife Odan, Osun State, and the General Manager of the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS). He worked at WNTV (now NTA Ibadan) as a film editor and librarian from 1959. He wrote, produced, and acted in several popular Yoruba plays and movies including Thunderbolt: Magun (2001), Afonja (1 & 2) (2002), Basorun Gaa (2004), and Sawo-Sogberi (2005). He was responsible for translating Nigeria's National Anthem from English to Yoruba, and also translated speeches of prominent Nigerian leaders.

PERSONAL LIFE

Faleti married Moteniola Faleti and later Olubunmi Abosede Faleti, a retired broadcaster. He fathered 15 children. He died on July 23, 2017, at the age of 95, after observing a brief morning devotion with his family at his Ojoo residence in Ibadan.
