Our Only Hope

In a cramped room a widow and her three children sleep on a single mattress. Her son Chinedu wakes screaming, struck by psychosomatic blindness that leaves his eyes perfect but his world dark. The family owes six months of rent and now faces eviction. Amara has dropped out of school to sell second-hand clothes so her brother Chinonye can finish his education. She works as a cleaner for Chief, who denies her a salary advance and frames her mother for stealing his Patek Philippe watch, sending the older woman to police custody for two days. Amara begs Chief for her mother's release and he demands her body. She agrees but flees at the last moment, selling her possessions to raise bail. Chinonye receives an invitation to UK football trials through a friend's connection. Amara encounters Raymond, a stranger she once helped with directions, and he reappears at her stall to treat her with dignity. Desmond, his elder brother, is revealed to be Chief's business associate. The widow returns to work for Chief despite her children's protests, declaring she must endure because their throats are dry. A neurologist friend of Raymond's diagnoses Chinedu's blindness as conversion disorder rooted in accumulated trauma and offers to oversee his care. Amara confronts her mother with the truth of Chief's proposition and the family grapples with shame. Chinedu regains his sight in hospital, shouting at colors and light. Chinonye is confirmed for the sponsored UK trials with flights paid, validating Amara's sacrifice. Amara visits stroke-stricken Chief at Raymond's urging and forgives him for the false accusation and sexual coercion. Chief confesses the watch was stolen by his maid and weeps in remorse. Raymond arranges Chief's hospital transfer and vows to recover the stolen assets. The family reunites at home, the mother freed from threats after Amara pays rent with stall money and Raymond's help.
