Gerald is an insensitive employer who treats his staff poorly, often firing house helps and making strict, humiliating rules. Lillian is hired even though Gerald feels she does not meet his standards. However, because he desperately needs help, he decides to keep her. Their relationship quickly becomes a constant power struggle. Lillian refuses to be intimidated by his insults and often stands up for herself, leading to frequent arguments over her work, food, and behavior. Things change when Gerald’s mother comes to visit. Wanting to avoid her criticism and maintain appearances, Gerald is forced to pretend that he and Lillian are closer than they really are. Lillian takes advantage of the situation to negotiate better treatment and working conditions. His mother’s presence also forces Gerald and Lillian to spend more time together, making it harder for him to treat her simply as an employee. During this time, Lillian’s genuine and down-to-earth personality becomes clear, and Gerald’s mother quickly sees the good in her. Mama soon realizes that Gerald and Lillian are not actually in a real relationship. Instead of becoming angry, she uses the opportunity to teach Gerald that he needs someone genuine like Lillian to help him become a better person. Before leaving, she changes the balance between them and helps Gerald realize that his feelings for Lillian have become real. After his mother leaves, Gerald sincerely apologizes for the way he treated Lillian. He admits that although he has been hurt by people in the past, Lillian is different and has made a positive difference in his life. He asks for her forgiveness and tells her that he wants her by his side—not as part of a fake relationship, but because he genuinely wants to be with her.
