Zulu Adigwe

EARLY LIFE

Zulu Adigwe was born in Enugu, Eastern Region, Nigeria, on 27 June 1945. He spent most of his childhood in Enugu but moved to Austria where he attended primary and secondary school. Prior to acting, he studied French and German, worked as a teacher, and briefly studied medicine before returning to Nigeria after his father's death. He then enrolled at the University of Ibadan, where he studied theatre arts and graduated with first-class honours.

CAREER

Zulu Adigwe was a Nigerian actor and singer, best known for paternal roles in Nollywood films. His earliest appearance on Nigerian television was in the sitcom 'Basi and Company' (1988–1990), where he played the lead character Mr. B, re-inventing the role as a guitar-strumming layabout. He performed a new theme song for the show, and an album, 'Mr. B Makes His Millions,' was released in 1990. In 1991, Adigwe was part of the original cast of 'Checkmate,' playing Professor Monday Edem in the pilot episode. His first film, 'Blood of the Orphan,' brought him acclaim. Other notable film appearances include 'Living Abroad' (2004), 'Blood Diamonds' (2003), 'Unforgetable' (2003), 'Issakaba' (1999, 2000), 'The Grandmasters' (2006), 'My Promise' (2006), 'City of Kings' (2006), 'Divided Heart' (2006), 'The Powerful Baby' (2015), 'Feast of Love' (2018), 'Love Gone Sour' (2018), 'Chameleon' (2018), 'Kosiso: Voice of the Poor' (2014), and 'Living in Bondage: Breaking Free' (2019).

PERSONAL LIFE

Zulu Adigwe was married to Blessing Adigwe. He met her in Nsukka and they married when he was around 30 years old (sources indicate around 1982). The couple had three children — two sons and one daughter — who grew into adulthood. He kept his family life relatively private. He was a Catholic and a Knight of the Order of St. Mulumba. Colleagues and tributes described him as a devoted family man who valued peace, discipline, and service. He died on 23 April 2024 at the age of 78. The exact cause of death was not publicly detailed at the time of announcement. News of his passing was confirmed by the Actors Guild of Nigeria and industry figures, including producer Stanley Nwoko.

Zulu Adigwe is remembered as one of Nollywood’s reliable veteran actors who helped bridge the era of classic Nigerian television sitcoms and the home-video/film boom. He often spoke of art as a form of service to humanity rather than purely a pursuit of fame or money. His death in April 2024 was widely mourned across the industry, coming during a period when Nollywood had already lost several prominent figures. He left behind a body of work spanning television, film, and music, and a reputation for professionalism, cultural rootedness, and quiet dignity on and off screen.
