Biography
EARLY LIFE
William Andrew Murray Boyd was born on March 7, 1952, in Accra, Ghana. He spent a significant amount of his childhood in Ghana and Nigeria, where his mother was a teacher and his father was a doctor. He was in Nigeria during the Biafran War (1967-1970), an experience that influenced him. At the age of nine, he attended Gordonstoun in Moray, Scotland. He then studied French at the University of Nice, followed by English and Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. He continued his studies at Jesus College, University of Oxford, where he completed a dissertation on Percy Bysshe Shelley.
CAREER
Boyd worked briefly as a television reviewer for the New Statesman before returning to Oxford to teach the contemporary novel at St Hilda's College. His first novel, 'A Good Man in Africa', was published in 1981. In 1983, he was selected as one of the twenty best young British novelists and became a member of the Royal Society of Literature. He also became an Officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2005. He has received honorary doctorates in literature from the Universities of St. Andrews, Stirling, and Glasgow. Boyd chose to focus on writing after receiving offers for screenwriting projects, which he viewed as an opportunity to pursue a career as a writer over teaching.
PERSONAL LIFE
William Boyd has been with his wife, Susan, since they met as students at the University of Glasgow. All his books are dedicated to her. Susan is a senior staff member at Harper's Bazaar magazine, leading them to spend 30 to 40 days a year in the USA. They own a house in Chelsea, West London, but spend most of the year in their house in Bergerac, where William Boyd produces wines.
