EARLY LIFE
Vusi Kunene was born in Meadowlands, north of Soweto in Johannesburg, on April 12, 1966. He discovered his acting abilities at the Shell Road to Fame School of the Arts. In 1991, Vusi pursued acting as a career, enrolling at the Wits School of Drama for a Degree in Dramatic Art. During his studies, he performed in numerous student stage dramas, including 'The Hill,' where he was noticed by his future agent, Moonyeenn Lee. He was also cast in three television films: 'Drumbeats,' 'The Line,' and the mini-series 'Rhodes,' as well as feature films like 'Cry the Beloved Country,' where he played Reverend Msimango.
CAREER
Vusi Kunene is a prolific South African actor, widely recognized for his role as Jack Mabaso in the soap opera 'Generations' and its sequel, 'Generations: The Legacy.' He has also played Funani Zwide in 'House of Zwide,' Bhekifa in 'Isibaya' (2014–2016), and Jefferson Sibeko in 'Isidingo' (2009–2014). Since his debut in 1993, he has appeared in over 25 films and television shows. After graduating from drama school, he performed in 'The Coloured Museum' at the Market Theatre. His television career expanded with roles in 'Homelands' (1996) and 'Deafening Silence' (1997). In 1998, he won an Avanti award for Best Actor for 'Justice for All' and received nominations for his roles in 'Homeland' and 'Generations.' His filmography includes 'Fools' (1996), 'Kini and Adams' (1996), 'A Reasonable Man' (1998), 'The King is Alive' (1999), 'Final Solution' (2001), and 'Diamond Hunters' (2001). He also had roles in 'Charlie Jade' (2005), 'Yizo Yizo,' 'The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency' (2008), and 'Soul City' (2010). Notable later film appearances include 'Eye in the Sky' (2014) as Major Owiti, 'A United Kingdom' (2016) as Chief Tshekedi Khama, and 'Beyond the River' (2015). He also appeared in 'Shaka Ilembe' (2023) as King Makhasane.
