VJ Emmie is Uganda's most famous Video Joker (VJ), an artist who performs live commentary, translations, and comedic dubbing over films. He achieved global cult-icon status as the energetic, fast-talking narrator for the DIY action movie studio Wakaliwood (Ramon Film Productions), directed by Nabwana I.G.G. His iconic, hyper-enthusiastic lines from the viral 2010 movie Who Killed Captain Alex? (such as "Movie-movie-movie!", "Action-packed movie!", and "Drop the bomb, man!") turned him into an internet sensation and a core part of mid-2010s meme culture. In Uganda's video halls and roadside cinemas, VJs act as a crucial bridge between foreign films and local audiences. Rather than doing a strict, literal translation, VJs like Emmie dynamically perform the films in Luganda, providing multi-character voice acting, adding sound effects, explaining the plot, and injecting sharp local humor. While he initially voiced Hollywood blockbusters locally, his collaboration with Wakaliwood introduced his unique art form to the world. His commentary track was baked right into the international releases of Who Killed Captain Alex? (2010) and Bad Black (2016). When not performing for major features, VJ Emmie operates an intense schedule, dubbing around 10 films per week for local DVD and digital distribution.
