Professor Ugochukwu Chuka Okonkwo was born on May 7, 1974, in Isigwu Village, Ekwulumiri, located in Nnewi South Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria. He was born into a respectable and academically driven family. His father, the Late Dr. Edmund Okonkwo, was a community leader and intellectual, while his mother, Mrs. Esther Onyemaechi Okonkwo (née Anakebe), was a strong, faith-driven woman and matriarch of the family who instilled discipline, compassion, and resilience in her children. His mother, Mrs. Esther Okonkwo, passed away in 2024 at the age of 77, and was laid to rest on November 29, 2024, in their hometown. She hailed from Amaekwulu Village, Ezinifite, in Aguata Local Government Area, also in Anambra State. She was a daughter of the Late Umeanakebe, a respected elder in the Ezinifite community. Growing up in the culturally rich and industrious region of southeastern Nigeria, Ugochukwu was immersed early on in values of education, service, and innovation. He showed a strong aptitude for science and technology during his early years and was particularly drawn to problem-solving and creative engineering concepts. This natural curiosity propelled him toward a career in mechanical engineering. He completed his primary and secondary education in Anambra State and went on to pursue undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering, followed by postgraduate specialization in mechanical design and materials technology. Throughout his academic journey, Ugochukwu remained a standout scholar, consistently demonstrating leadership and scholarly brilliance. His research interests—particularly in materials engineering, structural design, and radiation protection technologies—were seeded during these formative academic years. Academic and Administrative Leadership: Professor Ugochukwu Chuka Okonkwo’s rise through the ranks of academia has been marked by a sustained commitment to excellence, service, and institutional transformation. As a full Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, he has consistently combined teaching, research, and service to advance the mission of the university and uplift the engineering profession in Nigeria. Over the years, Professor Okonkwo has held several high-impact administrative positions that reflect the trust and respect he commands among peers, students, and university leadership. His leadership trajectory within UNIZIK includes: Dean, Faculty of Engineering (elected 2023): As the current Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Okonkwo leads one of the university’s most dynamic and technically intensive faculties. He is responsible for academic oversight, curriculum development, faculty welfare, budget management, and strategic partnerships. His deanship represents a new chapter of innovation, research excellence, and institutional growth for the faculty. Director, Chisco Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain Management: In this role, Professor Okonkwo provided strategic direction and academic leadership in logistics and supply chain education. Postgraduate Sub-Dean, Faculty of Engineering: As Sub-Dean, he was instrumental in the redesign and accreditation of postgraduate programs.
