Biography

EARLY LIFE

Born on 1 August 1955 in Ibadan, Nigeria. His father, the late Bishop Adeolu Adegbola, was tutored by missionaries and was one of the first in his hometown to receive formal western education.

CAREER

Tunde Adegbola is a scientist, musician, engineer, linguist and culture activist. He completed a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at the University of Lagos and a master's degree in computer science from the University of Wales (Swansea). He practiced for many years as a sound engineer. He then completed a PhD in information science (with specialisation in human language technology) at the University of Ibadan. He is best known for his work in setting up most of the pioneering private television and radio stations in Nigeria, and other African nations like São Tomé and Príncipe. He is the founder of TIWA systems (established 1985, pioneered desktop publishing, nonlinear video editing, and broadcast station design) and the executive director of Alt-i (African Languages Technology Initiative, started 2002, focuses on human language technology for African languages, developing a Yoruba keyboard, speech recognition, text-to-speech synthesis, machine translation, spell-checking, automatic diacritic application, and software localization). He partnered with Microsoft to localize Microsoft Windows and Office to Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. He teaches artificial intelligence as an adjunct in the University of Lagos, University of Ibadan and Afe Babalola University. He was a research fellow at Innovative Computing Inc (Quik Cat) of Cleveland, Ohio. He also advocates for the resurgence of Nigerian languages and their adoption in mainstream technology.

PERSONAL LIFE

Tunde Adegbola is married to Inyang (née Ndaeyo) from Nkari in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. They have three male children: Emem, Edidiong and Imoh. He is proud of his African heritage, often wearing traditional African clothing and footwear. He travels frequently, collecting local musical instruments. He is a keen musician and former national athlete.
