Biography

EARLY LIFE

Toyosi Etim-Effiong was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. She attended Corona School Victoria Island, Queen’s College, Yaba, and graduated from Bowen University with a 4 point GPA in Economics. She then pursued a Master’s degree in Economic Development and Policy Analysis at the University of Nottingham. After a brief and unfulfilling career in internal audit at a bank, she moved to New York to study Broadcast Journalism and later Producing at the New York Film Academy.

CAREER

After returning to Lagos from Nottingham, Toyosi briefly worked in the Internal Audit department at a bank before moving to New York. During her time in New York, she started writing for BellaNaija as a guest contributor, interned at Complex at the Rockefeller Center, and worked with Sahara Reporters in the Entertainment Department, where she produced and presented a show called “The Gist with Toyosi Phillips.” Upon her return to Lagos, she worked as a Production Manager on an NdaniTV series, then joined ARISE News as a producer and presenter. She also served as a Publishing Editor for Folio by CNN, responsible for creating and overseeing short-form content. She eventually produced her talk show, “As Toyo Sees,” which was licensed by Africa Magic, and produced shows for other media personalities before establishing her company, That Good Media. That Good Media specializes in Talent Management and International Strategic Partnerships. She has held the position of Global Director of Content for Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) and is dedicated to promoting authentic African narratives globally and empowering Nollywood. She is credited as a producer for the 2024 film 'L.I.F.E' and the 2025 film 'The Herd'.

PERSONAL LIFE

Toyosi attributes her strong self-confidence to her father, who consistently affirmed and defended her during her formative years. Following her father's passing, she deepened her faith, believing that her self-confidence is now rooted in a spiritual understanding that she cannot fail. As an entrepreneur, she identifies closing knowledge gaps as a major challenge, always seeking to learn and understand what is needed to overcome obstacles. She is committed to the growth of Nigeria's creative sector and initiated workshops for aspiring TV producers and media executives. She was recognized as one of Nigeria's inspiring women by Leading Ladies Africa in 2022. She is on a mission to empower Nollywood for global recognition and has partnered with Essence Film Festival to promote Nollywood on a global platform.
