Biography
EARLY LIFE
Thomas Ernest Aldredge was born in Dayton, Ohio on February 28, 1928, the son of Lucienne Juliet (née Marcillat) and William Joseph Aldredge. He was a pre-law student at the University of Dayton in the late 1940s, and later attended the Art Institute of Chicago, Goodman School of Theatre in 1949. He decided to pursue acting after attending a performance of 'A Streetcar Named Desire' in 1947.
CAREER
Aldredge had a respected Broadway stage career spanning five decades, making his debut in 'The Nervous Set' in 1959. He received five Tony Award nominations and won a Drama Desk Award for 'Sticks and Bones' (1972). He originated roles in 'On Golden Pond' and 'Into the Woods' (Narrator/Mysterious Man), and appeared in 'Passion' and 'Inherit the Wind'. He also co-founded The Premise, an Off-Broadway coffee house theater. Aldredge had a 50-year career as a character actor in television and film, winning a Daytime Emmy Award in 1978 for portraying William Shakespeare. His notable television roles include Hugh De Angelis on 'The Sopranos', and appearances in 'Ryan's Hope', 'Damages', and 'Boardwalk Empire'. He appeared in Cool Red (1976) which is a co-production between Nigeria and the United States.
PERSONAL LIFE
He was married to stage and screen costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge from December 10, 1953, until her death on January 21, 2011.
