Biography

EARLY LIFE

Theo Lawson grew up as a 'Lagos boy' and studied architecture at the prestigious Architectural Association School in London between 1978 and 1985, where he experimented with traditional African and high-tech design styles. He found solace in Fela Kuti's music. After returning to Nigeria, he served in Jos for five years, where he was married and had two children. He later returned to Lagos due to ethnic cleansing in Jos.

CAREER

Theo Lawson is a professional architect, cultural entrepreneur, and advocate. He designed and built the Bauchi State Museum in 1987. In 1990, he established Total Consult, a design and build practice. In 1999, he co-founded the 'C.I.A.' (Creative Intelligence Agency), a collaborative that conceived Freedom Park, which was realized ten years later. Freedom Park Lagos is one of his most celebrated projects, rehabilitating Nigeria’s first colonial prison into a public arts space. His other notable works include The Motherlan’ performance centre, University of Lagos Anniversary Park, Kalakuta Museum, and the Kuti Heritage Museum Abeokuta. He defines his core interests as public and green spaces. He appeared in films like the 2024 film The Man Died, as well as appearing in productions like Our Best Friend’s Wedding (2017) and Unforgivable! (2023).

PERSONAL LIFE

Theo Lawson is the long-time partner of Yeni Anikulapo Kuti, the first child of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. He has Togolese ancestry and has two children.
