Biography
Steve Allis is an actor known in early Nigerian cinema history for his role as Peter in the 1971 film adaptation of Chinua Achebe's classic novel, Things Fall Apart. The 1971 production holds a unique place in the history of Nigerian film and literature adaptations, long preceding the modern era of Nollywood. The movie was a 91-minute Technicolor production jointly created by Nigerian, German, and American companies. It combined elements of Achebe’s first novel, Things Fall Apart, and his second book, No Longer at Ease. Steve Allis shared the screen with prominent international and early African pioneers. The film starred British-Senegalese actor Johnny Sekka as Obi Okonkwo, Ugandan Princess Elizabeth of Toro as Clara Okeke, and pioneering Nigerian actor Orlando Martins as Obierika. While the 1971 movie was filmed almost entirely on location in Nigeria, it is often overshadowed by the highly popular 1987 Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) miniseries adaptation, which famously starred Pete Edochie as Okonkwo.
