Biography

EARLY LIFE

Joseph Olaitan Adenuga Jr. was born on 19 September 1982, to Nigerian parents, of respective Yoruba (paternal) and Igbo (maternal) backgrounds, in Tottenham, North London, England. He is the eldest of four children, including fellow musician Jme, radio presenter Julie, and graphic designer Jason. His father, Joseph Sr., was a DJ known as Joe 90, who played afrobeat, dancehall, reggae, and ska. Skepta attended Tottenham College for a short period.

CAREER

Skepta began his career as a DJ with the Tottenham-based grime collective Meridian Crew. He transitioned to MCing around 2005, briefly joining Roll Deep before co-founding Boy Better Know in 2006. He released his debut album, 'Greatest Hits', in 2007, followed by 'Microphone Champion' (2009) and 'Doin' It Again' (2011). In 2015, he made his acting debut in the film 'Anti-Social'. His critically acclaimed fourth album, 'Konnichiwa' (2016), which included hit singles 'That's Not Me' and 'Shutdown', won the Mercury Prize. In 2018, he collaborated with ASAP Rocky on the global hit 'Praise the Lord (Da Shine)'. He released 'Ignorance Is Bliss' in 2019 and the collaborative album 'Insomnia' in 2020. Skepta is also a fashion designer with his label MAINS, a film director (for 'Tribal Mark'), and runs the Más Tiempo record label. In 2022, he signed with Wasserman Music.

PERSONAL LIFE

On 4 April 2018, Skepta received the chieftaincy title of Amuludun ('Chief Entertainer') of Odo-Aje in his Nigerian hometown in Ogun State. He has two children, a daughter named River (born October 2018) and a son (born 2021), with fashion buyer and brand strategist Alanna Wain. He is also a visual artist, with his paintings being displayed at Sotheby's in 2022. Skepta identifies as a British immigrant, feeling both too Black to be British and too English to be Nigerian.
