Seko Shamte

EARLY LIFE

Seko Shamte grew up primarily in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, while also spending parts of her early childhood in the United States (including Massachusetts) and Asia due to her family’s movements. Her parents are Fulgence Tingitana (an engineer) and Antonia Tingitana (an education specialist). They encouraged her writing skills by sending her to summer writing camps. She attended Mzizima High School, where she developed interests in history and music; she played the violin and served as chairperson of the music club. At a talent show at Zanaki Secondary School, she performed and was noticed by Radio One. At age 17, this led to her own show on East Africa Radio, marking her entry into the media industry.

CAREER

After graduating from Marymount Manhattan College in 2005, Shamte became Head of Programming at East Africa Television (2005–2008). In that role, she oversaw the creation of popular programs including Ze Comedy (the highest-rated comedy sketch show on Tanzanian television at the time), Friday Night Live, 5 Live!, and Nirvana. In 2008, she founded her production company, Alkemist Media, with the mission of producing meaningful Tanzanian and African content for international audiences. Early work included stories for CNN’s Inside Africa and Inside Story (covering topics such as NBA player Hashim Thabeet and Maasai migration), as well as pieces for ABC networks and the BBC. East West Love (2026) She has also been involved in panels (including at Oxford University) discussing African media transformation and technology, and contributed to collaborative art projects. Her work consistently focuses on Tanzanian identity, history, gender, and social issues while aiming for international visibility.

PERSONAL LIFE

Seko Shamte has been married to Amour Shamte since 2011. She is based in Dar es Salaam and has spoken of her husband as a source of daily inspiration. She maintains a relatively private personal life while focusing publicly on her professional work and advocacy for African storytelling.

Seko Shamte is recognized as a key figure in advancing Tanzanian cinema (“Bongo film”) onto global platforms. Through Alkemist Media, she has worked to fill gaps in international recognition of Tanzanian stories. She has been profiled by OkayAfrica as one of their 100 Women and has participated in academic and cultural initiatives such as the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence. She continues to advocate for authentic African narratives, gender representation, and the professional growth of the Tanzanian film industry.
