EARLY LIFE

Rachel Bakam was born on 11 September 1982 in Kaduna State, Nigeria, into the Bajju ethnic group from Zonkwa in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area. She was raised in Kaduna State, where she completed her primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Her father passed away when she was just 12 years old, which forced her to take on responsibilities early. At the age of 16, she began working, first as a salesgirl in a supermarket and later in a recording studio. Despite these challenges, Rachel excelled academically and in extracurricular activities. She served as President of the Literary and Debating Club and as Head Girl at Kaduna Capital School. She went on to study English and Theatre Arts at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, where she graduated as the best female student and the overall best graduating student in the Faculty of Arts. She later pursued further training in Digital Filmmaking at the New York Film Academy. These early experiences in Kaduna shaped her into a resilient, multi-talented individual with a strong foundation in the arts and a passion for storytelling and humanitarian work.

CAREER

Rachel Bakam was a versatile Nigerian actress, writer, TV presenter, and producer whose career spanned film, television, and advocacy. She began acting in the early 2000s, playing a lead role in the popular Hausa drama series Rayuwa. Her breakthrough in mainstream entertainment came through her work as a television host and producer. She created and hosted the popular show Trends & Rachel, which aired on major Nigerian stations including the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), African Independent Television (AIT), DSTV, and Startimes. She also produced and presented the humanitarian-focused programme Rachel the PIPER and its Hausa version, RACHEL MAI KAKAAKI. As an actress, she appeared in several Nollywood films, including Black Knight, The Last Day, Asunder, Dangerous Mission, The Good Son, Blue Flames, Ladies First, and If I Am President (2018), where she played a show host character named Rachel. Beyond entertainment, Rachel founded and served as President of the Nigerian Water Ski and Wakeboard Federation (NWWF), bringing the sport to Nigeria. She was the CEO and Managing Director of Rayzeds Media Ltd, her production company, and worked as a media consultant for various organizations. Her advocacy work was equally impactful. As an Anti-Human Trafficking Ambassador for the Devatop Centre for Africa Development, she actively campaigned against sex trafficking and modern slavery in Nigeria. She also served as a peace and tourist ambassador and received numerous awards for her contributions, including the 2015 Pan African Humanitarian Award (Most Promising TV Personality of the Year), the Sir Tafela Balewa Leadership Award (Media Entrepreneur of the Year), the 2016 United Nations World Habitat Humanitarian Award, the Nigerian Dream Personality Honors, the 2016 Ambassador of Peace Award, the 2015 African Achievers’ Award, and others from platforms in Amsterdam and London.

PERSONAL LIFE

Rachel Bakam was a devoted mother who left behind a son after her passing. Details about her spouse or romantic life were kept relatively private, with public focus remaining on her professional achievements and advocacy work. She was known for her compassionate nature and commitment to helping others, particularly through her roles as a peace ambassador and anti-human trafficking advocate. Following the Southern Kaduna crisis, where hundreds of lives were lost, Rachel partnered with figures like John Fashanu and the Big Church Foundation to provide relief materials to victims. She was also deeply involved in campaigns against sex trafficking and modern slavery through organizations like the Devatop Centre for Africa Development, where she served as an Anti-Human Trafficking Ambassador. Rachel was a 2015 alumna of the United States International Visitors Leadership Programme and worked as a media consultant for groups including the Performing Musician Employers Association (PMAN) and the African Fashion Reception in Paris. Tragically, Rachel Bakam passed away on 13 April 2021 at the age of 38 due to complications from anaemia while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Abuja. She was survived by her son, mother, and three brothers. Her death was mourned widely across Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with tributes highlighting her kindness, talent, and dedication to humanitarian causes.
