EARLY LIFE

Osaigbovo Eriamian toe, popularly known as Gbovo the Storyteller or Dr. Gbovo, was born and raised in the Benin City area of Edo State, Nigeria, with deep roots in the ancient Benin Kingdom and surrounding villages like Ogbona and Ugbekpe-Ekperi. He grew up in a family environment rich with storytelling. As a child, he enjoyed bedtime stories told by his older siblings. He soon began creating and telling his own stories, which his siblings found entertaining even when they were sometimes made up. This early passion helped him develop strong skills in prose, poetry, and drama. By the time he was in his final year of secondary school, he had already written his first screenplay and a TV series script. These creative beginnings showed his natural talent for storytelling long before he pursued formal education in medicine. His upbringing in Edo State, surrounded by rich cultural traditions, later influenced his work in using stories and films to educate and heal communities.

CAREER

Osaigbovo Eriamian toe is a multiple award-winning filmmaker, director, and producer who trained as a medical doctor but found his true calling in using films as a powerful tool for healing and education. He graduated from the University of Benin Medical School around 2010. During his medical training, he initially planned to focus solely on clinical practice to “cure every ailment.” However, experiences during his junior posting in surgery — including participating in a splenectomy for a road accident victim and witnessing another patient’s death from a head injury — made him see the limitations of medicine alone. The turning point came during his rural posting in Ogbona village. There, he wrote, directed, and acted in a stage play about immunization and social status, performed in the palace of the paramount ruler of Ugbekpe-Ekperi before over 300 villagers. The play successfully educated and entertained the audience at the same time. This experience convinced him that filmmaking could be the “medicine” he truly wanted to practice — one that could reach and treat many people simultaneously through powerful storytelling. After graduation, he revived his childhood passion for stories. He studied filmmaking through books, attended classes and masterclasses (including one by Stanlee Ohikhuare at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City, where he excelled in cinematography fundamentals), and began producing films focused on health education and social issues. His works address topics like drug misuse (e.g., Tramadol and codeine), cyberbullying, public health awareness, self-confidence, and societal challenges. Notable films and projects include: Fatbulous (2023) — Director and Producer (promotes self-confidence for plus-size individuals) Edeleyo – In The Hands Of Fate (short film, 2021) — Director (story of a woman nearly becoming Oba; won awards at film festivals) COVIDIOT A Different Cell Anonymous From Sambisa With Love Hooked Visiting Hour (recent short film with trailer and premiere) Nation Forgotten (collaborated on screening of this documentary about Nigerian pensioners’ plight in 2022 at Deepend Cinema in Benin City) His film on Tramadol and codeine misuse was screened at the Association of Public Health of America’s annual convention in 2020. He has received over 20 nominations and awards from film festivals worldwide. He describes himself as “the doctor who treats with films,” combining his medical background with creative storytelling to educate, inspire, and heal communities. He is also a scriptwriter and continues to mentor and support the creative scene in Benin City.

PERSONAL LIFE

Osaigbovo Eriamian toe is a family-oriented man who values his roots and loved ones deeply. He is married and often shares warm tributes to his wife, whom he calls his “Peace of mind.” He has an elder brother named Osamwonyi Eriamian toe, and he has posted loving messages for his mother’s birthday and a posthumous birthday tribute to his late father (“Baba”), showing how much family means to him. His personal journey reflects resilience and empathy. After training as a medical doctor, he realized the emotional and communal power of storytelling. He is known among colleagues and friends in Benin City’s creative scene as empathetic, supportive, and inspirational — someone who shows up for others at screenings, masterclasses, and events. He writes scripts in quiet places like the basement at the University of Benin, seeking solitude to focus on his craft. His work often draws from real-life observations about health, society, and human struggles, making his stories both personal and universally relatable. He balances his medical career with creative passions, recently starting a new chapter as a Resident Doctor in Psychiatry while continuing his filmmaking.
