Biography
Mohamed Diab began his career as a screenwriter for popular Egyptian films, including Real Dreams (2007), The Island (2007), 1000 Mabrouk / 1,000 Congratulations (2009), The Replacement / Badal Faqed (2009), Decor (2014), and The Island 2 (2014). He also wrote for the TV series Tayea (2018). His directorial debut came with Cairo 678 a film about sexual harassment in Egypt that was released shortly before the 2011 Egyptian revolution. The movie earned widespread acclaim and multiple international awards, including at the Chicago International Film Festival, Dubai International Film Festival, and others. It marked him as a bold voice in Arab cinema. He followed with Clash (Eshtebak) (2016), which he co-wrote and directed. In 2021, he directed and wrote Amira, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Diab made history in 2022 as the first Arab director in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directing four episodes and executive-producing six episodes of the Disney+ series Moon Knight. Later projects include co-writing and producing Happy Birthday (2025), the first Egyptian film to win multiple major awards at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Mohamed Diab is married to Sarah Goher, a filmmaker and his long-term creative partner. The couple frequently collaborates on projects; Sarah directed the feature Happy Birthday (2025), which Diab co-wrote, while they worked together on selecting authentic Egyptian music for Moon Knight.
