Marwan Hamed

EARLY LIFE

Marwan Hamed was born on 4 April 1977 in Cairo, Egypt, into a prominent media and artistic family. His father is the late renowned screenwriter and producer Wahid Hamed (known for socially and politically charged scripts, including collaborations with major Egyptian stars). His mother is journalist Zeinab Sweidan. Growing up in this environment gave him early exposure to storytelling, production, and the Egyptian film industry. He studied directing at the Higher Institute of Cinema in Cairo, graduating in 1999. While still a student and shortly after, he worked as an assistant director to established filmmakers including Sherif Arafa, Samir Seif, and Khairy Beshara.

CAREER

Hamed began with short films and commercials. His short Li Li / Lilly (2001) won multiple international awards, including the Grand Prix du Public at Clermont-Ferrand and the Golden Tanit at the Carthage Film Festival. He has directed hundreds of television commercials (over 300–400 for major brands including Etisalat, Vodafone, WE, Orange, Ezz Steel, and others) as well as music videos (notably for Amr Diab). His feature debut was the ambitious The Yacoubian Building (Omaret Yacoubian, 2006), adapted from Alaa Al Aswany’s bestselling novel with a screenplay by his father Wahid Hamed. Starring Adel Emam, Nour El-Sherif, Yousra, and a large ensemble (including Hend Sabry and Mohamed Emam), it was one of the most expensive Egyptian productions of its time. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, screened at Cannes and other major festivals, and became both a critical and commercial landmark. Subsequent major features include: Ibrahim Labyad (2009) – starring Ahmed El-Sakka and Hend Sabry The Blue Elephant (El Feel El Azraq, 2014) – adapted from Ahmed Mourad’s novel, starring Karim Abdel Aziz; a critical and commercial success that won multiple awards (including Best Director and Best Film at Egyptian festivals and recognition at Brussels) The Originals (El-Asliyyin, 2017) Diamond Dust (Torab El Mas, 2018) The Blue Elephant 2 (2019) – broke Egyptian box-office records Kira & El Gin (2022) – an epic anti-colonial action drama set in the 1920s; described as one of the biggest Egyptian/Arab productions to date, topping the box office and winning numerous awards He also contributed a segment to the collective film 18 Days (2011). In 2025 he completed El Sett, a biopic of legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum (starring Mona Zaki), which received its European premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) 2026 as part of a major retrospective dedicated to his work. Hamed has served on festival juries (including Red Sea and El Gouna) and received the Creative Achievement Award at the El Gouna Film Festival, where he has also served on the advisory board.

PERSONAL LIFE

Hamed maintains a relatively private personal life. He has spoken in interviews about the influence of his father’s career while emphasizing that he built his own path through formal training and extensive commercial work.

Marwan Hamed is widely regarded as a bridge between commercial Egyptian cinema and ambitious, literature-based storytelling. His films frequently combine high production values, strong ensemble casts, and explorations of Egyptian society, psychology, history, and the supernatural. He continues to be one of the most bankable and critically respected directors in the Arab world, with a career spanning more than 25 years across features, commercials, and television.
