Biography
EARLY LIFE
Justus Esiri was born in Oria-Abraka, Delta State on November 20, 1942. He attended Urhobo College in Effurun, Bendel State, before moving to Germany for higher education. He studied at Maximillan University, Munich (1964), Prof. Weners Institute of Engineering, West Berlin (1967), and the Ahrens School of Performing Arts (1968).
CAREER
Esiri began his acting career in Europe while working as a German translator for the Voice of Nigeria. He gained prominence for his role as the 'Headmaster' in the popular Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) TV-series 'The Village Headmaster' and for playing Obierika in the film adaptation of Chinua Achebe's 'Things Fall Apart'. He is considered one of the pioneers of Nollywood, with an acting career spanning from the 1960s.
PERSONAL LIFE
Justus Esiri was married to Omiete Esiri and they had six children, including musician Dr. Sid. Esiri died on February 19, 2013, in a Lagos hospital due to complications from diabetes. His funeral included a tribute night organized by the Actors Guild of Nigeria, a mass at St. Jude Catholic Church in Lagos, and a Service of Songs in Warri before his burial in his hometown of Abraka. Many government officials and entertainment personalities attended his funeral.
