EARLY LIFE
John Uzoma Ekwugha Amaechi was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to an English mother and a Nigerian Igbo father. He was raised in the Heaton Moor suburb of Stockport, England, where he attended Tithe Barn Primary School and Stockport Grammar School. He discovered basketball relatively late, at the age of 17.
CAREER
Amaechi played college basketball for Vanderbilt and Penn State before embarking on a professional career. He became the first undrafted player to start an NBA game, appearing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic, and Utah Jazz. He also achieved success in Europe, winning the FIBA Intercontinental Cup with Panathinaikos. After retiring from sports in 2003, he transitioned into psychology and high-performance consultancy, founding Amaechi Performance Systems.
PERSONAL LIFE
In February 2007, Amaechi made headlines globally by becoming the first former NBA player to publicly come out as gay, as detailed in his memoir 'Man in the Middle'. He is a high-profile advocate for diversity and inclusion and was appointed an OBE in 2011 for his services to sport and the voluntary sector.
