John Adewunmi

EARLY LIFE

John Adewunmi was born on November 19, 1952, in Ede, Osun State. He developed a passion for acting early and ventured into the profession in 1974. He received his acting tutelage under the late legendary theatre practitioner Oyin Adejobi and was part of the Oyin Adejobi theatre group, where he honed his craft alongside other notable figures in Yoruba theatre.

CAREER

John Adewunmi had a long and respected career spanning decades in Yoruba theatre and film, beginning in the 1970s. He was a member of the iconic Oyin Adejobi theatre group and appeared in numerous classic Yoruba productions. Notable credits include, Ija Omode (2002), Jaiyesimi, Ayanmo, Ekuro Oloja, Orogun, Akanji Oniposi and others. He was known for character roles that contributed to the rich tradition of Yoruba cinema. He remained active until shortly before his passing and was regarded as a foundational figure ("legend") in Yoruba Nollywood.

PERSONAL LIFE

He passed away on February 1, 2022, at the age of 69 after a brief illness. His death was mourned across the Nigerian entertainment industry, with tributes highlighting his contributions and long service.

He was a member of the Theater Arts and Motion Picture Producers Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) in Osun State. Colleagues and fans remembered him for his dedication to the craft and his influence on younger generations of Yoruba actors.
