EARLY LIFE

His grandfather, John Amata, was a pioneering playwright and actor, and his father, Zack Amata, was a veteran actor. His uncles, Fred and Ruke Amata, are also established filmmakers. Jeta was exposed to filmmaking from an early age, routinely integrated into production processes. He obtained a degree in theatre arts from Benue State University in Makurdi, Nigeria, after initially studying science subjects in secondary school.

CAREER

Jeta Amata entered the Nigerian film industry (Nollywood) in the mid-1990s, directing his debut feature film, 'Glamour Boys,' in 1995/1996 at age 21. He gained early international attention with 'Game of Life,' which led to a BBC-commissioned documentary in 2003. His breakthrough work, 'The Amazing Grace' (2006), became the first Nigerian film screened at the Cannes Film Festival and won Best West African Film at the Screen Nations Awards UK. Other notable films include 'Black November' (2012), which premiered at the United Nations General Assembly and earned Best Film at the African Oscars; the musical 'Inale' (2010); and historical dramas 'Mary Slessor' and 'Alexa Affair.' Amata's career spans Nollywood productions and cross-continental projects through his company, Jeta Amata Concepts, based in Lagos and Los Angeles. He is known for focusing on themes of social justice, historical narratives, and the Niger Delta crisis. Amata pioneered the incorporation of international Hollywood actors into Nollywood films to enhance production scale and quality.
