Issiaka Kane

Issiaka Kane is a prominent Malian actor best known for playing the lead role of Niankoro in the critically acclaimed 1987 African cinema masterpiece Yeelen (translated as Brightness). Directed by legendary filmmaker Souleymane Cissé, the film won the Jury Prize at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival, cementing Kane's place in international cinema history. In Yeelen, he portrays a young man on a quest to master magical, ancestral powers while fleeing his envious and tyrannical father. His performance is widely celebrated for its intense presence and emotional depth. Beyond Yeelen, Kane has remained a respected figure in West African media and performing arts, often affectionately referred to by his character name, Nianankoro or Siakaba. He also appeared in the retrospective documentary film A Daughter's Tribute to Her Father: Souleymane Cissé, which reflects on the monumental legacy of the director who discovered him.
