EARLY LIFE

Ifeyinwa Tessy Onwuemene, popularly known as Ify Onwuemene or Ifey Onwuemene, was born on December 24, 1959. She was the daughter of the late Ogbuefi Ugwejikwe and Rosa Anazia. She hailed from Onicha-Ugbo (also written Onicha-Ugbo) in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria.

CAREER

Ify Onwuemene was a Nollywood actress best remembered for her television work. She rose to prominence through the popular sitcom Everyday People, in which she portrayed the loving, caring, and understanding wife of the character played by the late veteran actor Sam Loco Efe. The series featured a strong ensemble that included Gloria Anozie-Young, Ejiro Okurame, Nobert Young, Big Tony, Ignis Ekwe, Carol King, Desmond Elliot, Seun Soremi, and Juliet Martin-Abazie. Her performance in Everyday People established her as a familiar face to Nigerian television audiences and remains the role most closely associated with her name. She worked in the industry for many years and was regarded as a veteran actress by the time of her death. PERSONAL LIFE

Ify Onwuemene was married to Anthony Okonkwor Onwuemene. The couple lived in a compound in Idumu-Ogbele Quarters. Among her children is the actress Ekwi Onwuememe (also referred to as Ekwi Onwuemene), known for roles in films and series such as Promise Me Forever, 30 Days, Love of Love, Tumini’s Song, Hand of God, Remember Me, For Real, Shattered Illusions, Secret Intention, and the long-running soap Tinsel. Ekwi studied English and Literature at Lagos State University and earlier appeared in soaps including Heaven’s Gate, Closet, and I Need to Know. Ify Onwuemene was a Jehovah’s Witness. She battled endometrial cancer for several years. Her womb was surgically removed, and she underwent multiple chemotherapy sessions. By 2019 doctors had classified the illness as stage 4. She continued to experience significant pain and abdominal bloating and required regular fluid drainage procedures (costing hundreds of thousands of naira each time). Colleagues and members of the public supported her treatment through donations; she spent more than ₦10 million on medical care. A GoFundMe campaign was also launched. She passed away on May 25, 2021. Her remains were taken to her husband’s compound in Idumu-Ogbele Quarters, Onicha-Ugbo, and she was buried according to Jehovah’s Witness rites.

Ify Onwuemene is remembered in Nollywood circles for her grounded, maternal screen presence and for the quiet strength she showed during her long illness. News of her death was publicly announced by her colleague and friend Gloria Anozie-Young. Tributes highlighted both her professional contribution to Nigerian television and the support she received from fellow actors during her medical battle. She was laid to rest in her hometown of Onicha-Ugbo, Delta State, shortly after her passing in May 2021.
