Biography
EARLY LIFE
Born in Lancaster, Lancashire in 1979, Gary Foxcroft attended Lancaster Royal Grammar School from 1991 to 1998. He earned a BA Hons in Social and Cultural Studies from the University of Derby in 2001 and an MRes in Environment and Development from Lancaster University in 2003, which included an overseas placement in Nigeria.
CAREER
Gary Foxcroft is known as the co-founder of Stepping Stones Nigeria, a charity dedicated to protecting the rights of disadvantaged children in the Niger Delta, particularly those accused of witchcraft. His interest in social justice and environmental issues led him to study the oil industry in Nigeria for his master's thesis. Stepping Stones was registered as a charity in 2005. Between 2005 and 2006, he and partner Naomi Chapple established a school and initiated projects in Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria. Their campaigning efforts resulted in Akwa Ibom state enacting a law in 2008 that outlawed the stigmatization of children as witches. Foxcroft collaborated with Nollywood to produce "The Fake Prophet", which was described as the first of its kind to combine NGO advocacy with the entertainment power of Nollywood. The film was designed to challenge deeply held beliefs about witchcraft and highlight the dangers of fraudulent pastors who profit from accusing children.
